FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
October 2, 2017—Provo, Utah—I am horrified by last night’s events in Las Vegas. My heart goes out to the victims and their families. As the facts of this tragedy become clear, I hope we as Americans can come together and find a way to make sure such crimes never happen again.
Politicians of both parties have a tendency to jump to policy prescriptions as soon as these events occur. That’s not what I’ll do today. Today is for mourning and remembering those who have fallen, both in Las Vegas and in too many places around our country. As a doctor, I’ve seen firsthand what happens to gunshot victims and their families. They need our support—with thoughts and prayers, yes, but most importantly, with loving action.
As details emerge about this horrendous crime, I’ll be studying them carefully. We will discover what could have been done to prevent this tragedy. And then, I hope you will join me in embracing a solution that will save the lives of our children, our friends, and our fellow Americans.
